Newsletter Issue 6 August 2010
Comment from Jeff Ivey
Welcome to the latest Haes Systems newsletter.

As we all look forward to a summer break, things are still busy at Haes Systems.

Over the last two months we have been conducting a customer satisfaction survey. For those of you that responded, thank you so much for your time and feedback. As promised, one lucky participant has been chosen at random to win a case of wine. The winner is Kate Fisher of Arena Fire Systems Ltd. Congratulations!

The feedback has been very positive, although we still acknowledge there is room for improvement. One of the areas you would like us to develop is regular communications, and we hope to do this with the regular publishing of this newsletter and keeping you up to date via email about any promotional offers or product information.

Another surprising outcome of the survey alerted us to the fact that a considerable number of you weren’t aware of our most innovative product to date, the Fusion control panel. This product was launched in late 2009 and is the only panel in the market to combine analogue addressable technology with that of conventional, making it a versatile offering for your customers. As an appropriate reminder, the ‘Five things you didn’t know…’ feature will be on the Fusion.

Further to this, Fusion has been third party approved to EN 54-2 & EN 54-4 by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) and the approval certificate from the Construction Products Directive (CPD), meaning the panel has now met with all relevant industry approvals. This is a fantastic development for Haes Systems and our employee profile in this newsletter is with Mark Durbridge, our Technical Director, who was instrumental in this achievement.

I would also like to announce that our new Sage sales order processing system has now been implemented, hopefully with minimal disruption to our normal service to customers.

Thanks

Jeff Ivey

Employee Profile
Mark Durbridge is the Technical Director at Haes Systems and talks about his time here and his involvement in his most recent of achievements, the story of the Fusion control panel.

How long have you worked at Haes Systems?

I have worked at Haes Systems for 26 years, starting as an engineer, but for the last 18 years I have been the Technical Director. Before I worked here, I was an engineer with British Airways which was a very different place to work.

What does your general job entail?
I head up the research and development area of Haes Systems. We are engineering new products and developing the latest generations of panels, this also involves assessing and sourcing components to be used in production and researching replacements for these when necessary.

I am also involved regularly in technical support, as this helps me to keep abreast of customers requirements. I enjoy resolving technical problems and answering any product queries for customers. This is mainly over the phone but sometimes it may involve going on site to help customers there.

The latest innovation from Haes Systems is the Fusion control panel. No doubt, this has been a big part of your recent working life. What is the story behind the Fusion development ?
As with any construction related industry, there is an increasing focus on health and safety. It is a natural progression that a critical area such as fire becomes more regulated and standards are then enforced. The LPCB and CPD approval is already a legal requirement in the rest of Europe and soon to be in the UK.

We were at a point at Haes Systems where we understood that in order to continue to produce control panels and grow our business, approvals of the appropriate standards had to become part of our production process. Conventional technology was the system used in Haes Systems’ leading control panel but the increasing emergence of analogue addressable systems meant that we needed to consider a competitive panel in this market for the future. It was therefore suggested that we develop one panel that covered both. So, the Fusion was born. The Fusion product offered a fantastic solution for our customers, ensuring they had a control panel that was approved by the industry and also gave the option for them to use either analogue addressable or conventional technology or both.

The Fusion has now received approval by LPCB and CPD. How has this been achieved?
The Fusion has taken three years to develop and from the beginning we have known that it was going to be submitted for approval by LPCB and CPD so it was developed with this in mind and tested throughout to ensure compliance. It has been a difficult process and an approval takes about a year to complete but we have got there!

The Fusion was approved after its first submission, which is a fantastic achievement. We now know that our panels can survive the rigorous testing associated with the approval stages; such as high voltages, high humidity, -40 degree temperatures and many more conditions that the panels get subjected to.

What do you see for the future of the fire protection industry and Haes Systems’ role in this?
With regard to Haes Systems in particular, we are looking forward to launching our Hochiki protocol Fusion later this year. The approvals mean that we are now in a competitive position to enter into the European market, which will be a new direction for Haes Systems.

What do you like about working at Haes Systems?
I like that Haes Systems is a friendly organisation and enjoy being involved at every stage of an end to end process. I compare that to my time at British Airways where you feel you are a small cog in a very large wheel. At Haes Systems, it is challenging but in turn, very rewarding.

What are your hobbies?
I enjoy playing the acoustic guitar mainly 60s and 70s music as well as hill walking and riding my Moto Guzzi motorbike.

What is your pet hate?
Well, being a motorbike rider I guess I’d have to say, speed cameras!
